Ramage/Bronstrup Press

Adam Ramage was a Scottish cabinetmaker who emigrated to Philadelphia about 1795. He is better known for his wooden presses, but in 1833 he designed an iron press, the Philadelphia, to compete with others that were being built. It had the distinctive wrought-iron frame with a triangular top that you see on our press although ours was made after Ramage’s death in 1850 when his successor in business, Frederick Bronstrup, continued to make the Philadelphia, under the name of the Bronstrup. They were made until 1875.
